A record fleet of 12 Squibs enjoyed three days of fabulous racing at the 5th PSC Squib Keelboat Championship, held at Peninsular Sailing Club, Pulau Indah Marina.
As Race Committee Chairman and two-time former champion, Jeremy Camps remarked:
“If you’re going to lose, it is acceptable to do so to a three-time sailing Olympian like Nur Shazrin Mohamad Latif.”
Sailing aboard Quicksilver with PSC member Benny (Faeznur Farok) as crew, Nur Shazrin Latif demonstrated the skill, consistency and tactical awareness required to master a Squib despite it being her first time sailing the class.
Championship Winner
Nur Shazrin Latif, a three-time Olympic representative in the ILCA 6 class, including a race victory at the Tokyo Olympics and multiple SEA Games and Asian Games gold medals, dominated the championship with race results of the following:
With two discards applied, she finished with an impressive total of 5 points to secure the title.

The Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC) team started strongly but found the windy conditions on Sunday particularly challenging, finishing on 11 points.
3rd – Cabaret 7

Crew: Eppi
Despite sailing with a damaged hip and at 82 years of age, PSCS Commodore Jeremy Camps secured third place. Crew Eppi returned specially from Thailand to support the campaign.
4th – Lady VG
Helm: Rama Menon
Crew: Justin
The RSYC Commodore and PSC founder led the best of the remaining fleet.
5th – Jerry
Helm: Thomas
Crew: Alessandro
The newly refurbished white-hulled Jerry won the opening race of the championship.
6th – Emily
Crew: Evan, Yoon and Eugene Ho
The family team produced an excellent second-place finish in the demanding Sunday conditions.
7th – Recca 2
Crew: Aqasya, Jade and Amirah
The all-girl PSC crew improved throughout the championship, culminating in a third-place finish in the final race.
8th – Kittywitch
Crew: Martin and Charles
A consistent series rewarded the team with eighth overall.
9th – Skybird

10th – Second Wind
Crew: Ronan, Michael and Melissa
11th – Alice
Crew: Richard, Billy and Dan
Unlucky mechanical issues caused the team to miss two races.
12th – Buck Up
Crew: Raden Hilmi and Md Noulal
Representing the Sea Scouts, the inexperienced but determined crew improved steadily throughout the championship and showed real potential for the future.
Seven Races Across Three Days
The championship comprised:
- 2 races on Friday
- 3 races on Saturday
- 2 races on Sunday
Making a seven-race series with two discard scores.
Race Officer Simon James, supported by long-time assistant Chandran and the PSC race management team, set a variety of excellent courses including windward-leeward and triangle-sausage configurations. Combined with strong tidal effects on the Pulau Indah race course, competitors were tested throughout the weekend.
Although mornings began with light winds, conditions steadily built each day. Sunday’s racing proved especially demanding, with gusts approaching 20 knots and strong tidal streams challenging even the most experienced sailors.
In one memorable race, Quicksilver lapped the fleet after identifying the winning strategy of sailing well up the northern shoreline before tacking towards the weather mark.
A Showcase for the Squib Class
The championship once again demonstrated the versatility and competitiveness of the PSC fleet of UK-built Squib one-design keelboats. Freshly prepared and cleaned before the event, the fleet delivered close racing throughout the championship.
The event concluded with prize-giving celebrations in PSC’s new clubhouse, accompanied by excellent food prepared by Chef Peter Hindle.
