Weekly Race Report: Great Racing and Mother’s Day Cheer at PSCS River Series

PSCS WEEKLY RACE REPORT

PSC Squib River Series 2 — Race 2 (PSCS WRR 26-W02)

Sunday, 10th May 2026

Rainer aboard KittiWitch had volunteered, or perhaps been volunteered, to take Faheem and new member Syatilla (“Stella”), both experiencing Squib sailing for the first time.

With Dom unavailable due to illness, Alessandro joined Class Captain Jeremy aboard Cabaret 7, while Emily sailed by Evan and his wife.

The fleet enjoyed favorable tidal conditions and a moderate breeze of around 12 knots, providing ideal racing conditions on the river. An even start saw the three boats spread across the channel with the outgoing tide assisting the fleet toward the river mouth.

Each boat briefly took turns leading as they searched for the strongest pressure across the course. Cabaret 7 initially led the fleet out of the river on a reach toward the Selat navigation buoy, sailing close to the rhumb line. However, to their surprise, Emily appeared higher and faster, overtaking Cabaret 7 and rounding the mark comfortably in front.

The response from Cabaret 7 was immediate. With experienced crew work from Alessandro, the spinnaker was hoisted quickly, and the chase began. Although the gap initially looked impossible to close between the evenly matched One Design boats, Cabaret 7 steadily reeled Emily in on the downwind leg against the tide.

Meanwhile, KittiWitch, some distance astern, also set a spinnaker and continued a determined pursuit.

As the boats approached the finish, excellent spinnaker handling aboard Cabaret 7 finally paid off, allowing Jeremy and Alessandro to edge past Emily shortly before the line to secure victory by a short head. Emily finished a close second, with KittiWitch taking third place.

Following the race, the fleet gathered for the usual post-race discussion on tactics, wind shifts, and what might have been done differently. Commodore Jeremy then remembered a bottle of prosecco waiting in the fridge, and with it being Mother’s Day, the occasion was fittingly celebrated together with the mothers aboard, Emily and our newest member Stella.

Another great day of sailing for the PSCS Squib fleet.
