A new chapter in Malaysia’s fight against marine plastic waste officially began today at the Peninsular Sailing Club in Pulau Indah, with the inauguration of the Mobula 8 sea cleaner. The momentous occasion saw the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, deliver a speech highlighting the critical need for this initiative.
The project is a collaborative effort by Malaysia’s Marine Research Foundation, Swiss NGO The SeaCleaners, and the Minister’s own Ministry. Minister Nik Nazmi emphasized Malaysia’s significant marine debris problem due to increasing waste generation. The Mobula 8, an innovative vessel designed to efficiently remove surface plastics, will be stationed in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
While the Mobula 8 will actively clean the waters, the Minister stressed that the initiative also underscores the broader commitment to strengthening waste management, raising public awareness, and fostering a culture of sustainability to prevent pollution at its source. The launch marks a pivotal step towards innovative, on-the-ground action for a healthier Malaysian marine environment.
